A passionate and skilled advocate of cities and their ability to invent a more sustainable future, Nicolas BUCHOUD is the founding principal of Renaissance Urbaine, the urban R&D company he has established with Dr Lan-Phuong Phan (Ecole Normale Supérieure) in 2006 in Paris.
Over the years, Renaissance Urbaine has worked in France (Greater Paris) and globally from Vancouver to Vladivostok, successfully crossing the boundaries of public and private spheres and connecting collaborative innovation with local investment and development issues.
Since 2010, Renaissance Urbaine has specialized in metropolitan intelligence and the implementation of large scale development and regeneration strategies emphasizing human, territorial and financial assets. In BRICS countries, Renaissance Urbaine has been developing a unique expertise based upon partnerships with high potential experts and teams.
In 2013, Nicolas Buchoud has been elected as Chair of the Paris based international think tank the Grand Paris Alliance (Cercle Grand Paris de l’Investissement Durable) which he founded in 2011. Promoting enhanced connectivity between social change building, impact investments and metropolitan development agendas, the Grand Paris Alliance gathers leaders of the public and private sectors in real estate and public development, innovation, cleantechs and smart cities, local government, research, and the financial sector.
It works in close partnership with several organisations worldwide, in North America, as well as in Japan, Indonesia Russia or Europe. The Grand Paris Alliance received an award and a grant from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Foundation in 2012 in Washington DC (ULI's 75th Anniversary Celebration).
An urban entrepreneur, Nicolas Buchoud is an active member of a number of professional networks and societies globally, ranging from the Deutsche Akademie für Städtebau und Landesplanung (DASL) and the American Planning Association to the Global Planners Network (GPN) or the Siberian Urban Lab. He is also an honorary member of the Bandung Creative City Forum (Indonesia) and a former member of the New York Academy of Science.
His latest report, Better Professionals, Better Cities ! has been published by the Habitat Professionals Forum and UN-Habitat fall 2013. Noticeably, Nicolas Buchoud has recently been a member of the Scientific Council of the Atelier International du Grand Paris (AIGP), as part of the team lead by the architects Jean Nouvel and Jean Marie Duthilleul.
Nicolas Buchoud has directed numerous articles and books on urban development, such as Strategic Cities, planners for the XXIst Century, edited by the French Ministry for Urban Development and Housing (2008). Over the last ten years, Nicolas Buchoud has been regularly lecturing in France and worldwide about contemporary urban and economic changes and future urban investment ecosystems. Since 2012, he has been working closely with the Municipal Art Society in New York for the Rockefeller Foundation. In 2014, he has co-organised a seminar in Bellagio about the resilience and livability of complex urban systems.
Nicolas Buchoud has served over 10 years in key positions in the public sector in France, as chief of staff of a city mayor and advisor of the President of the Greater Paris Regional Authority, where he monitored the regional masterplan revision process and the regional climate change policy towards COP 15 in Copenhaguen.
He is graduated from the French national institute for political science (Sciences Po Paris) in public law (MA) and urban planning and design (MA). He holds a master degree in XVIIth Century Chinese History (Paris l La Sorbonne).
